It is that time of year again, and our Los Angeles personal trainer at Train With Danny hopes the New Year brings health and prosperity to all!
Unfortunately, it is also the time of year when people start making New Year’s resolutions that place a lot of pressure on their physical and emotional well-being.
We know that it is easy to get caught up in the idea of a new year bringing change. However, there are many drawbacks to focusing on New Year’s resolutions as the answer to turning the page.
Here is how to avoid the pitfalls associated with making abrupt changes to your lifestyle.
Most New Year’s Resolutions Focus on Exercising More & Healthier Eating Habits
In most online polls regarding New Year’s resolution, the most popular are exercising more (50%), saving money, (49%), and eating healthier (43%).
While all of these are great goals, the idea that the flip of the calendar can make all these things happen is why so many New Year’s resolutions fail.
As a personal trainer in Los Angeles, we can speak to at least two of these popular resolutions and respond by saying:
It is incredibly difficult to not only become motivated and start a new exercise routine but even more challenging to stick with it. The same is true for changing your eating habits for the better.
Here is why.
If you are currently not exercising, and plan to throw yourself into an arduous workout routine on January 1st, that strategy is going to be difficult to maintain. And could be dangerous. If you are unsure of what workouts are right for you, you could suffer an injury before you get started, which will derail your goals without notice.
Instead, use our 5 Tips for Finding Your Fitness Motivation or Inspiration, and focus on building your success — not an immediate change.
Now, the food.
We know that the holidays often bring enormous amounts of food, sugar, and alcohol. It happens. Do not beat yourself up about eating that extra piece of cake or indulging in another glass of champagne by throwing yourself into an unsustainable diet.
The difference between making lifestyle changes and dieting is mountainous. And when people focus on “dieting” over seeking healthier alternatives, they typically fail.
Instead, use our 5 Tips for Developing a New Healthy Habit, and enjoy the fluid changes that come with the marathon that is better health. It certainly does not occur during a sprint.
